MiSE Global Startup Program: the blockchain goes on Erasmus

Registrations for the Global Startup Program launched by the Italian MiSE are open for a period of 30 days from March 6th, 2019. And thus also blockchain startups go on Erasmus.

The Italian Ministry of Economic Development, in collaboration with the ICE Agency, has published the new Global Startup Program in support of the Made in Italy, establishing a plan and an extraordinary fund dedicated to 120 innovative Italian startups holding patents to both strengthen their technical skills and to encourage new business opportunities and attract international investments.

According to what has been reported, the beneficiaries of the project are Italian startups not yet present in the international market with a core business focused on the following sectors:

  • ICT: blockchain, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, Industry 4.0, fintech;
  • Automotive and robotics: batteries and electric cars, autonomous driving, future mobility, car sharing apps and related web services;
  • Medtech: medical equipment and apps, life sciences;
  • Circular economy: low carbon emissions, innovative materials and substitutes for plastics;
  • Other innovative sectors

In addition, the program is divided into essentially 2 phases:

  1. Specialised training in English with a strong practical characterisation aimed at the management of start-ups;
  2. Internship period of 3 or 6 months abroad at selected incubators in the focus countries.

The first phase of training will take place in 4 different locations in Italy (from North to South) and will end by May 2019.

Whereas, the Erasmus funding period foreseen for the 120 selected startups could take place in countries such as the United Kingdom, USA, China, Japan, South Korea and Slovenia, where support will also be offered to accompany promotional events in host countries dedicated to startups.

Finally, the Global Startup Program provides for a total fund of 4 million euros. While the training seems to be free of charge, for the stay abroad the flat-rate financial support of 14 thousand euros per month is specified for each startup, of which 20% is non-refundable.

Michele Geraci, Undersecretary for Economic Development said:

“In this first phase we will finance 20 startups per country, so 120 in total, we will then consider extending the program to other countries: we have already started talks, for example, with India and Israel”.

The period for submitting the application is 30 days from the publication of the announcement on March 6th, 2019.
