Coinbase announces WalletLink: how to access dApps with the browser

Coinbase has announced, on their official blog, a new service called WalletLink: it is a feature that allows users to access their dApps directly from any browser, enabling a connection to the Coinbase Wallet.

The official announcement indicates that

“Starting today, Coinbase Wallet users can use their favorite decentralized apps (dapps) on any desktop browser with Coinbase Wallet’s WalletLink”.

WalletLink is a kind of “secure bridge” between the Coinbase Wallet application and the desktop browser. It is sufficient to scan a QR Code and it becomes immediately possible to use a dApp while keeping all the funds safe inside the wallet and, most importantly, keeping them separate from those present on the exchange.

Coinbase has always supported the use of decentralised platforms, a feature that, according to the company, has collected hundreds of thousands of users. Extending access through browsers such as

  • Google Chrome;
  • Mozilla Firefox;
  • Brave;
  • Microsoft Edge;
  • Opera;

is, without a doubt, a very good incentive. Users’ private keys will always be stored on their mobile devices. It’s a mechanism to prevent users from having to install bulky extensions on their browser and have to copy and paste private keys around.

To test Coinbase’s WalletLink, simply update the Coinbase Wallet version (19.1 on iOS and 18.0 on Android) and visit one of the following dApps that are currently integrated with the new service. The company also reports that there will be many more coming soon:

After scanning the QR Code with the Coinbase Wallet mobile app, the service will be active. Each time a transaction needs to be made, it will be notified via a ping on the phone for approval.

As is often the case with software in this sector, the WalletLink code has also been released to the public so that everyone can verify it and even implement it in different applications. After all, it’s well known that in this market the rule number one is trust. That’s why open-source projects are often much more successful than others.
