Bitfury Tardis: 80 TH/s Bitcoin ASIC on sale

A year ago, the company Bitfury made official a new chip for the mining of Bitcoin and all coins with PoW SHA256, the Bitfury Clarke. In addition to selling this chip to third-party assemblers, last November Bitfury also announced its 80 TH/s Bitcoin ASIC: the Bitfury Tardis B8.

The Bitfury Tardis B8 is a BTC mining ASIC capable of reaching a hashrate of 80 TH/s, for a consumption of 6.3 KWatt/hour of energy. The peculiarity of this device is that it has the typical form factor server rack 6U, which makes it very convenient to easily and quickly convert server farms into real mining farms.

Until now, this ASIC was only available to other companies wishing to buy a large number of units (at least one thousand). As of today, however, private users will be able to buy the Bitfury Tardis directly from the company’s website, instead of having to rely on any third-party resellers.

Bitfury Tardis: 80 TH/s Bitcoin ASIC for 6.3 kW

As mentioned at the beginning, the Bitfury Tardis is not a particularly efficient ASIC. With a power consumption of almost 6.3 kW, the energy efficiency per watt is around 79 watts per TH, almost half that of modern 7-nanometre ASICs which achieve efficiencies ranging from 40 to 45 watts per TH.

The company has made available two variants, characterised by two different hashrates, due to the presence of a different number of chips installed on the motherboards. The 72 TH/s model is sold on Bitfury’s official website at a price of about 3000 dollars, while the top of the range 80 TH/s is available at 3700 dollars.

These figures are quite high given the low efficiency of the product, whose chips are still made with a 16-nanometre production process. It should also be noted that the minimum order is 50 units.

This means that the target of these products is not clear since they are not very competitive with respect to the alternatives offered by the rival companies, which boast similar prices for the same amount of hashrate but, most importantly, a practically doubled energy efficiency, thus reducing operating costs.
