Following the fake launch of Ethereum 2.0, another scam is taking hold during these holidays: it’s a scam airdrop that would have been organised by a company pretending to be Bitmain.
In a post published on Medium, these hackers explain that to celebrate the millionth Antminer sold, Bitmain would have decided to launch an airdrop of 5,000 bitcoins (BTC) to be distributed among those who will send BTC to a certain address. It is obviously a scam.
The text is eloquent and the criminals allow a 90% return when choosing to send 4 BTC as 40 BTC will be sent via airdrop. Clearly, this is not true, it is just a trick to induce victims into sending more BTC.
Moreover, reflecting on the amounts, it is clear that this is a scam since 5,000 BTC, at the current price of $7200, corresponds to $36 million.
The link provided in the post on Medium redirects to a page designed in such a way that puts pressure on the victims, making them believe that many have already taken advantage of the offer and there are only a few BTC left.
No one has yet fallen for the fake Bitmain fake scam airdrop
So far, considering the fact that this is a post published very recently, the address corresponding to this airdrop has not received BTC, which means that nobody has fallen into the trap yet.
The industry is perhaps, one hopes, becoming more aware and fewer people end up affected by this type of online scam.
As usual, the recommendation is not to make any transactions in such cases, since it is 100% scam. Furthermore, it is enough to take a look at the official Bitmain page on Twitter to see that it features the words “Not giving away ETH” precisely to show that the company does not carry out this kind of marketing campaigns and does not do crypto airdrops.
