Lightning Torch stolen: the initiative continues despite the thefts

The Lightning Torch 2020 has been stolen at least four times. Nevertheless, Hodlonaut’s second initiative continues. It can be found on Twitter with the hashtag #LNTrustChain2.

It seems that to date, in just 9 days from its inception, the total number of thefts has now reached four.

“The #LNTrustChain2 torch just got stolen for the fourth time… And for the fourth time the person that sent to the thief has decided to keep it going out of his own pocket. Big ❤️ to Crypto49ers”.

Crypto49ers doesn’t seem to be the only torchbearer robbed by fake participants. Even the Co-Founder of BCademy, Giacomo Zucco, encountered a theft and wanted to create a tweetstorm to tell his misadventure.

“Ok, it’s time for a long (& quite educational) tweetstorm about my experience with the #LNTrustChain2 (y’all know what that is: the 2nd edition of the very cool Lightning Network experiment launched some time ago by @hodlonaut). This is what happened to me”.

There are 42 tweets in which Zucco, proud to be the first in Italy to obtain the second edition of the Lightning torch, during his car journey from Switzerland to Milan, has handed it over quickly but perhaps imprudently.

Zucco says he checked very quickly the tweet of the first bitcoiner who sent his invoice, the @wizard_btc account, verifying only after sending the torch (at the first traffic light in Milan) that the tweet of the account was no longer available and that therefore it was a fake account or, more simply, the ‘torch thief‘.

After realizing the scam, towards the end of his tweetstorm, Zucco shared his analysis and criticism on the trust and privacy model adopted by the torch on the Lightning Network.

Here’s one of his tweets:

“I actually think that a fairer criticism would actually be another 1: the fact that it incentives public invoice-sharing! In typical LN payments, invoices are just shared w/ the payer, not published on Twitter! The latter can actually represent quite a privacy problem!”

In any case, thanks to the torch being reintroduced by the robbed participants, the lightning network initiative continues its run around the globe with its movement monitored and analyzed by Hodlonaut:

  • 47 countries,
  • 119 connections,
  • 118 unique participants,
  • two thieves,
  • total value of 1.33 million satoshis.
