Five Star Movement proposes the blockchain for protecting the Made in Italy

The Italian Five Star Movement has proposed an agenda to implement the blockchain in the textile sector, in addition to the resolution to use the blockchain in the agro-food chain, so as to protect Made in Italy products. The resolution was discussed and approved on January 30th, 2020 by the Lombardy Agriculture Commission.

As always in these cases, the reason for using the blockchain is to guarantee to the consumer the origin of the product and therefore improve the transparency of Italian products.

The resolution explains that the Lombardy Region will “test blockchain applications in the agricultural sector and, in particular, for the traceability of products using decentralized, unalterable and distributed platforms”.

This part of the resolution, therefore, suggests that DLT or “private blockchains” will not be used, although another part of the document causes some confusion on the subject:

“The Blockchain is a shared and unchangeable data structure using a protocol which allows the transmission, storage and verification of data in a decentralized manner; – the Blockchain has been defined over time as the Internet of value which is characterized by four fundamental aspects: 1) decentralization, 2) transparency, 3) security, 4) immutability. The Blockchain can be considered a technology that belongs to the Distributed Ledger category; Distributed Ledger Technology or DLT can be defined as a set of systems conceptually characterized by the fact that they refer to a distributed registry, governed in such a way as to allow access and the possibility to carry out updates by several nodes of a network”.

In any case, should the resolution be approved, the Lombardy Region will also be responsible for promoting, “the adoption of traceability systems in the production of agricultural and food products within the Lombardy territory” and for enhancing local production so that the Made in Italy is always supported.

he agenda proposed by the Five Star Movement, with Marco Degli Angeli as first signatory, would commit the Lombardy Region to extend this to the textile sector.
