From PVC to PLA: new biobased and biodegradable gift cards launched

If plastic is everywhere, its eco-friendly replacement is no less. Introducing itself in all sectors, the biobased and biodegradable bioplastic produced from polylactic acid PLA is now also the material chosen by Spanish financial institute CaixaBank to produce new green gift cards, already in circulation since this September 2019.

CaixaBank is an example of how the fight against plastic pollution is of interest to everyone. In its press release it specifies as follows:

“CaixaBank gift cards are made entirely of biodegradable material, composed mainly of polylactic acid (PLA), a bioplastic obtained from corn starch. The rest of the card components are biomass. The result is an organic and biodegradable card, more ecological than traditional plastic which comes from oil with a decomposition period estimated between 100 and 1,000 years. “

In fact the new PLA gift cards will have a 2 year expiry both in terms of validity and duration of the material and its degradation.

Furthermore, it seems that the manufacture of the new CaixaBank green cards emits almost half of CO2 in the atmosphere compared to the quantity envisaged by the previous PVC cards.

Despite the data recording a continuous growth in plastic demand and supply in the petrochemical sector, many market players are starting to evaluate, invest and test bioplastics for their products.

In fact, like CaixaBank, there are many companies that contribute to a sustainable stance against the problems linked to climate change and pollution caused by plastic.

Bioplastics: a real need for the market of the future

Bioplastics still struggle to compete with petrochemical plastics. What mainly moves the different initiatives for its use are the regulations against plastic and environmental concerns.

But what would happen if bioplastics were conceived as a real necessity in the market of the future?

Undoubtedly, statements like substitute or alternative material that have always been associated with the world of bioplastics compared to plastic would be missing. Bioplastic would be considered as “the material”.

Another facet of the EarthBi project vision that considers biotechnology and related biological materials the emerging industry of this present in view of a more affirmative future.

    biotechnology market

In fact, biotechnology is already part of the current generation, which experiences a moment of mentality transformation by choosing “the material” and promoting where possible new products (as in the case of the CaixaBank just described).

And finally, it is revolutionary biotechnology that is shaping the development of bio-based and biodegradable bioplastic polymers. EarthBi has production processes entering fully into the revolutionary and eco-sustainable biotechnology market of bioplastics.
