From Marine Plastic Pollution to Air Plastic Pollution

    Microplastics inhaled through simple breathing

Recent studies have shown that microplastics, in addition to seas and oceans, are also present in the air we breathe, creating air plastic pollution.

The plastic microparticles, in fact, as well as being ingested through sea food or from drinking water from plastic bottles, can enter the human body even through our breath.

A threat to human health that could induce respiratory, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, affect the immune and nervous systems, and cause cancer.

This happens because microplastics are bio-persistent and therefore difficult to expel once introduced into the human body.

But how is air plastic pollution provoked?

    air plastic pollution causes

First of all, it is important to underline that the air pollution due to the presence of microplastics is in greater concentration indoors than outdoors.

These are tiny plastic particles that are released into the air generally by friction, heat or light from plastic objects that are also found in one’s own homes.

As for pollution of seas and oceans, air plastic pollution derives from objects rich in microplastics that are mostly found in the cosmetic industry (exfoliants, toothpaste, scrubs) but also in synthetic fabrics (clothes, coverings, furniture).

According to a study conducted by the University of California Santa Barbara, in the section on Pathways of chemical release from textiles it can be identified that even by washing, drying, wearing and disposing of synthetic clothing such as acrylic, nylon and polyester, it is possible to inhale plastic fibers microparticles.

Same thing in the field of cosmetics. The Environmental Audit Committee in Britain, which banned microbead use in January 2018, following the lead of the US, Canada and New Zealand. also states that showering with a body scrub alone may flush 100,000 microplastic beads into the wastewater system and into the air

Remedies for the emission of plastic in the air: biobased plastic

Also in this case, it is necessary to figure out the main cause why a material widely used such as plastic can really harm human health and the environment: its oil-based origin.

Like two sides of the same coin: traditional plastic has managed to scale the materials market thanks to its consistency and adaptability of use, but it has also contributed to emit a large amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution.

On the other hand, biological plastics are based substantially on natural resources, in some cases even renewable, managing to maintain a certain degree of environmental purification, especially in the air.

Biologically based bioplastics – biobased allow the continuous study of enzymes capable of creating sustainable materials that do not threaten human health and the environment.

EarthBi project, with its production processes patented on biobased and biodegradable bioplastics, contributes to the tour de force against global plastic pollution.

PLA bioplastics do not release harmful microplastics, in fact they are based on polylactic acid, produced from sugar cane. A completely renewable resource, which after the  composting process, returns to nature, initializing a new cycle.

Being able to use PLA in the cosmetic and textile sector would solve the continuous environmental degradation to which the sea and oceans, but also soil and air are constantly participating. The use of biobased bioplastics release purely natural and therefore eco-sustainable substances.

    air plastic pollution causes
