Sustainability initiatives behind the metadata tags

The current language on social networks and web services is also expressed by the fight against plastic. In fact, used as a thematic aggregator, the #hashtag represents the tag of modern communication that makes it easier for users to find messages on a theme or content.

With the increasingly discussed topic of the environmental plastic problem, many associations, organizations but also individuals have begun to give voice to their initiatives by creating new hashtags or joining those already present.

Projects to clean up the oceans, awareness campaigns, the introduction of alternative materials to plastic, are just some examples of the unlimited realities behind every hashtag against plastic.

Here are some of the current projects with related hashtags.

#plasticfree and the WWF Italy initiative

The largest Italian environmentalist association, WWF Italy, enters the field with its #plasticfree 2019 by organizing a large summer marathon to clean the coasts, in which partners of high scientific level and hundreds of volunteers participate.

The various events are organized and a reservation through the site is required. Specifically, it is a matter of joining in the days and places established by the association as a volunteer by filling out a forum. Or, you can also organize your free plastic day by proposing an invitation to the association to point out the various polluted areas scattered around the Boot.

The defense campaign of the Italian WWF Blue Capital is called Generazione Mare (or Sea Generation) and aims to free the most beautiful beaches from the invasion of plastic.

#iosonoambiente of the Ministry of the Environment

Even the institutions exploit the contemporary language, creating #iosonoambiente, to launch their own plastic free campaign. In fact, on October 4th, 2018, the media were informed that the plastic ban was already official within the Dicastery. In particular, the press release specifies some measures adopted by the Ministry as follows:

The elimination from vending machines of plastic bottles

The installation of natural or sparkling water dispensers, also refrigerated

Free distribution to employees of recycled aluminum bottles by the Cial Consortium, to consume water at the desk

The replacement, in hot drinks vending machines, of plastic cups with those of paper, and of plastic poles for turning coffee with wooden ones

The proposal to employees of virtuous paths to become more and more plastic free; the promotion of awareness campaigns for citizens and professional refresher courses for communication operators

The elimination of disposable products in the Ministry’s nursery school.

Not only that, the Italian Ministry of the Environment has just launched a plastic free campaign that includes a membership process for all participants.

On the website it is possible to access the page related to the guidelines for adhering to the initiative and knowing the number of municipalities and private individuals already registered.

#barbachallenge of the Italian television program Le Iene after the awareness act by Jason Momoa

Even the entertainment world becomes the testimonial of plastic free. With an indirect hashtag, the Italian television program Le Iene has promoted a new and amusing initiative against the plastic that takes its cue from the striking action of the famous actor of Game of Thrones, Jason Momoa.

In fact, last April 18, Momoa launched an important message.

Declaring: “I’m doing it to raise awareness. The plastic is killing our planet “, the actor shaved his long beard, inviting everyone to replace the plastic with aluminum that thanks to recycling is able to be back in 60 days, just like a beard.

Indeed, the complex procedure behind plastic recycling, compared to other materials such as aluminum, is one of the causes of current environmental pollution.

Le Iene, with a TV broadcast, created the new initiative launched by Momoa, challenging Italian celebrities with the #barbachallenge.

#targetplasticfree of the Worldrise Onlus dedicated to the nightlife

The young Onlus has created its own initiative with the slogan No Plastic More Fun #Targetplasticfree dedicated to the Milan international city nightlife, involving a network of nightclubs to avoid the consumption of throwaway plastic, significantly reducing the environmental impact deriving from the night entertainment.

In fact, the participants are in favor of replacing throwaway plastic with biobased and biodegradable bioplastic, just like the EarthBi bioplastic.

Saturday May 4th, in Milan, there was the “ la Notte Blu: il mare inizia da qui” (translated: Blue Night: the sea starts here) . In all the club participating in the initiative, including Santeria, Vinyl and Alcatraz, about 25,000 glasses, 10,000 straws and 8,000 plastic bottles were replaced with solutions with reduced environmental impact.
