According to a report by a local media, the famous mining company Bitmain has suffered a theft of 100 bitcoin (BTC) directly from their wallet.
The story dates back to September 2017 when Zhong Moumou, Bitmain’s employee since 2015, through a remote access to the company’s computers had access to the wallets used by Bitmain and stole 100 bitcoin; subsequently, Bitmain, realising the theft, immediately contacted the police to start the investigation so as to understand who was the culprit.
The arrest led the culprit to return the bitcoins and resulted in him being sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison on charges of stealing sensitive information from the company; he also had to pay a fine of 50,000 yuan, about 7,000 dollars.
This is not the first time that an employee exploits their position to derive personal benefit: in fact, a couple of months ago, a former Microsoft employee was also able to steal 1000 bitcoins. In this case, too, the culprit was arrested on charges of bitcoin theft.
