Bitcoin: seven thousand Antminers for clean mining

Gryphon Digital Mining has purchased 7,200 Antminer Pro to mine bitcoin with 100% renewable energy.

In 2021 the case of the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining emerged, following Elon Musk’s announcement that Tesla would stop accepting BTC as payment due to the environmental impact of Bitcoin mining, which was deemed excessive.

Since then, many things have been happening that do not necessarily go in the direction of reducing the energy consumption of mining, but more towards the use of sustainable energy sources, i.e. with a low environmental impact.

In the meantime, the energy consumption of Bitcoin mining has also been reduced, but this is probably only a temporary reduction.

In fact, the drastic drop in the total computing power used worldwide to mine bitcoin, which has practically halved in less than two months, is due to China’s political decision to ban mining by forcibly closing down mining farms.

A lot of computing power was in fact allocated in China, and this decision also had a considerable impact on energy consumption, but presumably only in the short term.

In fact, the Chinese mining farms themselves are moving elsewhere, and the fact that there is now much less competition means that it is easier and more profitable to mine bitcoin, since it is indeed a competition.

Hence, Gryphon Digital Mining’s decision fits perfectly into this complex dynamic.

The company’s goal is to become the world’s largest zero-emission bitcoin miner, and the purchase of an impressive 7,200 top-of-the-line machines goes in that direction.

With these Antminer Pros, they will have 720 PHash/s, or 0.72 EHash/s at their disposal, adding to the approximately 100 EHash/s total of all miners worldwide.

These machines themselves have no impact on the environment, as it is the electricity they consume and the energy used to cool them that does. The electricity used by Gryphon Digital Mining is 100% renewable and carbon neutral.

Initiatives such as this, and that of the Bitcoin Mining Council, aim to make Bitcoin mining sustainable, thus reducing its environmental impact.

Elon Musk himself has stated that if it could be proven that at least 50% of all the energy used in the world for Bitcoin mining was renewable, Tesla would return to accepting BTC as payment.
