Robinhood chooses blockchain for its expansion in Europe
Robinhood has chosen blockchain for its expansion in Europe, with the goal of offering the trading of tokenized US assets.
According to what reported by Bloomberg, sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that the fintech brokerage company is targeting Europe. Last month, in fact, Robinhood acquired a brokerage license in Lithuania that allows it to offer investment services throughout the European Union.
In any case, this expansion would involve the blockchain. In this regard, Robinhood would have developed a blockchain network that would allow European retail investors to trade U.S. securities.
This is an offer for trading tokenized securities, which are real-world securities (Real World Asset – RWA), such as stocks, real estate, commodities that are “transformed” into digital tokens and, therefore, are traded on a blockchain.
The tokenization of securities does not provide direct exposure to the underlying security, but rather, it is gaining more traction for all the advantages it offers.
Returning to Robinhood, it seems that the two crypto companies of Arbitrum and Solana Foundation could become partners in the project.
Robinhood and the blockchain: the CEO commented on the power of tokenization
In February 2025, Vladimir Tenev, CEO of Robinhood had commented on the power of the tokenization process.
In fact, in an interview, Tenev had stated as follows:
“You can sit in front of a software, create a coin and make it a trading object in 5 minutes […] It is a frightening thing. It is also an incredibly powerful thing when compared to the heaviness of the IPO process.”
The CEO of Robinhood believes that tokenization is very interesting, due to the ease with which blockchain technology can list assets and tap into global liquidity.
Robinhood is a famous trading app originally created for traditional markets, but it is now completely open to crypto markets as well. In fact, during the crypto bull run, it is precisely these new assets that attract the most attention on its platform.
In Q1 2025 market makers dominate
Recently, in the lengthy quarterly report submitted to the SEC, it emerged that the market makers, including the crypto ones, dominate the scene on Robinhood.
In practice, on Robinhood, broker-dealers, banks, and financial institutions engage in trading and brokerage activities, but the numbers have shown that market makers (including crypto) are the category that has brought the most revenue to the platform.
In fact, in the note, it emerged that 63% of the company’s total revenues from January to March 2025 came from bull market makers alone. This is a percentage increase compared to the first quarter of 2024, which was 52%.
Going into more detail, the most profitable market makers for Robinhood were Citadel Securities and B2C2 USA, with 12% each, followed by Wintermute Trading with 11%.
The crypto market makers are entities or companies that provide liquidity to cryptocurrency markets. Their main role is to ensure that there are always buyers and sellers available for a specific crypto, facilitating transactions and making the market more efficient.
