Canada’s crypto atm ban targets nearly 4,000 kiosks in anti-fraud push

Canada’s federal Spring Economic Update 2026 places the crypto atm ban at the center of a wider push against fraud and illicit finance. The government says the move would protect Canadians and cut off a major channel used by scammers.

Why Ottawa is targeting crypto ATMs

Officials described cryptocurrency ATMs as a primary method for criminals to defraud victims and move proceeds from illegal activity. Moreover, the update frames the proposal as a practical step toward money laundering prevention, not a blanket restriction on digital assets.

Canada currently has nearly 4,000 crypto ATMs, according to figures cited by CBC. That puts the country at the top of the world by crypto ATM concentration per capita, which helps explain why policymakers are focusing on the machines.

Under the proposal, Canadians would still be able to access crypto-related services through money services businesses (MSBs). That includes buying digital assets in physical locations, while reducing the role these kiosks can play in fraud.

Part of a wider regulatory trend

However, Canada is not acting alone. The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority ordered crypto ATM operators to shut down in 2022 after finding they had not registered legally, and Australia later intensified oversight in 2025.

In the United States, authorities have reported large losses tied to scams routed through Bitcoin ATM machines in recent years. Older Americans have accounted for a significant share of the victims, according to those reports.

That said, the proposal also fits into a broader shift in crypto regulation in Canada, where policymakers have been tightening crypto compliance measures around how digital asset services are delivered. The aim is to reduce exposure to digital asset fraud without closing off legitimate access entirely.

As Canada advances the measure in its financial update Canada, the debate will likely center on how far authorities should go in reshaping cash-to-crypto access. The planned crypto regulation Canada approach signals a tougher stance, while preserving supervised channels for users.

Canada’s proposal now places the country’s crypto atm ban alongside other global efforts to curb abuse of crypto kiosks. Moreover, it underscores a policy choice that favors stronger oversight over unrestricted access.
