YouTube targets crypto assets. The ban continues

A few hours ago, a ban has emerged on some Youtube channels dedicated to crypto information. Ivan on Tech is one of them:

More than 215,000 subscribers on a channel that gets people talking.

The channel, unless unlocked by YouTube admins, will be blocked for 3 months. An endless time for a guy who makes a living from his channel by publishing daily information and content related to the blockchain world.

The sensationalistic contents and too much enthusiasm towards some projects with dubious intentions have drawn on Ivan, besides the criticism of some users, the YouTube purge.

He is not the only one to have received this treatment in the last few hours. The list of small channels that seem not to respect the rules of the American giant is getting longer and longer.

Big Brother’s eye is on crypto again.

After the December ban, which led to the temporary closure of some channels, there has been talk of an error of judgment that has led to the reactivation of some accounts.

A targeted crypto ban by YouTube

If during the last purge by the Google company, reputable operators such as MetaMask and realities that have nothing to do with the dangers described in the consumer protection regulations have been targeted, this time the channels involved are in a more compromised position.

The high growth expectations of this market and the need to attract clicks to increase views are a devastating mix for the quality of content.

Speculation and the struggle to attract users towards the purchase of tokens or cryptocurrencies are not always well seen by the supervisory authorities.

Although they often provide quality information, some channels use sensational titles or create strong expectations to maintain high ratings and a strong sense of belonging.

The warning is triggered when the incitement to reckless buying might hit inexperienced users or the segment of the population that does not have the tools to understand where they are investing their time and money.

Without getting into conspiracies, all that remains is to observe a general discontent within this sector.

The normalization of cryptocurrencies needs time. One episode of The Simpsons is not enough to break a centuries-old monetary paradigm.

Many good investments will be made, a lot of money stolen and who knows how many more scams will be generated before the ecosystem is mature.

It is impossible to think that there will not be obstructionism or the willingness to divert the narrative towards a model that will ensure that some institutions maintain control over the system.

Crypto alternatives to YouTube?

Still unknown to the masses but operational and functioning, here are some alternatives to YouTube:

These platforms allow sharing video content with fewer restrictions. Some of them also allow receiving micropayments on the basis of views.

The discussion on the limitations that must be put in place to the complete freedom of sharing remains open.

Access to non-controlled platforms would make the publication of child pornography or incitement to violence easier.

Fraud and manipulation would be facilitated. The question here is what is the lesser evil.

Assuming that technology is able to allow it:

  • Who decides what can or cannot be included in an immutable and freely accessible decentralized ledger?
  • Do we really need to build a structure with maximum freedom of access and completely incensurable?

Libertarianism once again clashes with the protection of the weakest.

The globalization of information and free access to it brings with it a significant social challenge.
