A list of the most important hacks in crypto history

Ngrave, a hardware wallet company, has published a list of the biggest hacks and attacks in the blockchain and crypto world in recent years.

The tenth place on the list is held by The DAO hack that took place in 2016: by attacking the smart contract used for raising more than 12 million Ethereum (ETH) collected, the hackers were able to recover nearly 4 million ETH that are now worth more than 493 million dollars, even though the author may have been found.

In ninth place, there is the attack, also in 2016, against Bitfinex, which suffered a loss of just under 120 thousand BTC that, at its peak, exceeded a value of one billion dollars. Fortunately, some of these funds have been recovered.

At position 8 of the list there is an attack initially carried out in China, but the investigation revealed that it was extended to several victims including private individuals and companies, reaching a total of about 90 million dollars stolen, while at position 7 there is CoinBene, whose hot wallet was drained of all the ERC20 tokens.

At position 6 there is the famous QuadrigaCX case with a loss of about 190 million dollars.

BitGrail, renamed the Italian MtGox, is the fifth on the list for having lost more than 17 million XRB, which at the time was worth 195 million dollars while now just 8.5 million.

In fourth place there is Parity which in 2017 saw 664 thousand ETH go up in smoke, some recovered and others are frozen forever due to incorrect codes in the execution of the smart contract.

On the podium in third place, there is obviously MtGox with its 850 thousand BTC stolen in 2014: a figure that touches the 3 billion dollars, which is still in the process of recovery of funds and repayment of creditors.

Not even NEM has escaped the attack of the criminals, in 2018 500 million were stolen on Coincheck because they were all on a wallet without any protection. Recently, individuals were arrested who were holding the NEM from the attack.

Finally, at number 1 there is the PlusToken scam that managed to collect 180,000 BTC, 6.4 million ETH and 110,000 in USDT, for a total ranging between 2 and 3 billion dollars.

These attacks certainly have a common thread: most of them were funds deposited on centralized exchanges, often targeted by hackers. The recurring advice is not to leave funds on exchanges, especially centralized ones, as history shows that they can be targeted by hacker attacks.
