Nintendo: “what joy can we provide with NFTs and the Metaverse?”

Nintendo, responding to a questionnaire from MST Financial analyst David Gibson, revealed that it is thinking about how to introduce blockchain technology

Specifically, the famous video game company wonders how they can provide joy to users through the metaverse and NFTs.

Nintendo: introducing NFTs and Metaverse without diminishing fan joy

Indeed, in a roundup of tweets by David Gibson, he asked Nintendo what it thought about metaverse and NFTs.

“Q) How think about metaverse and NFT?

  1. A) We do have interest in this area, we feel the potential in this area, but we wonder what joy we can provide in this area and this is difficult to define right now (hey Facebook etc take note!!)”

“To be clear, the answer was mainly focused on metaverse, not NFTs”.

Nintendo confirms its interest in the potential of the metaverse and Non Fungible Tokens, something that numerous video game companies have already gotten into, but is concerned about how to use it so as not to diminish the “joy” in its fans.

In fact, the company has also confirmed that it is not currently working on anything, but that it is still defining what could be offered to players.

Nintendo with NFTs and metaverse for fans: the case of SEGA

While Nintendo is interested in the metaverse and NFTs, but doesn’t know how to use such technologies to make fans happy, other companies in the same industry have acted differently, experimenting with blockchain gaming.

Among the many is SEGA, which last April 2021 allegedly revealed that it had partnered with game developer Double Jump Tokyo with the intention of launching NFT content related to the company’s classic and current IPs, as well as future projects.

Unfortunately though, the reaction from fans was not positive, to the point of not going unnoticed by the company that decided to stop its plans regarding Play-to-Earn schemes.

In this regard, in late January, SEGA would have said

“In terms of NFT, we would like to try out various experiments and we have already started many different studies and considerations but nothing is decided at this point regarding P2E. There have been many announcement about this already including at overseas but there are users who shows negative reactions at this point. We need to carefully assess many things such as how we can mitigate the negative elements, how much we can introduce this within the Japanese regulation, what will be accepted and what will not be by the users. Then, we will consider this further if such efforts are in line with our mission of “Constantly Creating, Forever Captivating”, but if they are perceived as being a move to simply make money, then we would like to consider the position of letting go of the idea”.

Ubisoft and the implementation of NFTs in its games not understood by users

In December, Ubisoft, another video game giant and creator of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, For Honor and many others, announced that it had implemented NFTs in some of its games and planned to launch its own.

Through Ubisoft’s Quartz platform, players can acquire “Digits” in limited drops in the form of in-game tools such as weapons, vehicles and cosmetics and then sell them freely using crypto wallets.

The program is based on Tezos, so NFTs can also be bought outside of Ubisoft Quartz.

But even here, gaming fans seem to have had cold reactions about Ubisoft’s choice to introduce NFTs into mainstream gaming. However, a few days ago, Nicolas Pouard, an Ubisoft executive, said he stands by this theory and remains optimistic about it

According to Pouard, gamers have not yet effectively internalized the infinite potential of NFTs, and that as soon as users understand that they can get full ownership of their game assets and potential earnings from the secondary market, the coldness will turn into excitement and enthusiasm.
