Pundi X: here comes XPhone, the blockchain smartphone

During the GSMA Mobile 360 conference, which took place these days in Kigali, Africa, the CEO of Pundi X, Zac Cheah, announced the new blockchain smartphone XPhone.

This smartphone was presented in October last year at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, but due to technical problems, the launch was postponed to the third quarter of 2019.

This is the first blockchain-based terminal that allows calls through the blockchain, as stated by the CEO:

“The XPhone allows everyone to make a phone call on the blockchain. [This is the ]Africa’s first blockchain phone call”.

More specifically, Pundi X’s smartphone uses an operating system, Function X (FX) which is based on the blockchain, allowing the user to connect with the blockchain and use it to make calls, take pictures and surf the net. Everything is transmitted through the blockchain so that users can have full control of their data and thus prevent third parties from accessing the information.

The system is open source and there is no centralised service provider that can retrieve information from the end-users of the smartphone.

The company plans to produce only  and is looking for partners among the various telecommunications companies to produce more terminals.
