Retail investors want to enter the crypto market

According to Google Trends data, a mass of retail investors are trying to enter the cryptocurrency market.

The fact is that in recent months there has been a massive increase in the search volumes of the “buy crypto” query on Google

Indeed, compared to 12 months ago, this query has literally taken off, multiplying by 4 times, especially since February, when the crypto market started to rise and, for example, bitcoin had exceeded $10,000.

It should also be noted that the search for the “buy bitcoin” query follows a somewhat similar trend, but with volumes between three and five times higher.

As far as bitcoin is concerned, the trend showed very significant growth between the end of April and the beginning of May, followed by a decrease that nevertheless maintained the volume of searches well above that of 2019.

With regard to crypto in general, the peak occurred from the end of July, i.e. at the same time as some of the most sensational cryptocurrency price peaks, such as those linked to DeFi

It thus seems that these trends are linked in particular to price variations as well as sudden increases.

Who are the retail investors wanting to enter the crypto market?

These searches are certainly conducted in particular by less experienced investors, i.e. retail investors who are often novices in this sector.

Moreover, retail investors have been a powerful force in this sector in the past, moving the market several times in recent years, particularly during the speculative bubble at the end of 2017.

On this subject, Arcane Research stated in a recent report:

“Google searches for ‘buy crypto’ is now at the highest level since January 2018, when the crypto market peaked… This is definitely a sign of new investors who are curious on the cryptocurrency space, but we’re still far from the retail euphoria that was seen back in Jan ’18.

Bitcoin itself is not getting the same kind of traction, with the search interest for ‘buy bitcoin’ laying flat since the top in May when the halving took place”.
