Sorare and the first NFTs of a national football team

Sorare today announced an official licensing agreement with the French national football team to issue NFTs.

This is the first time that a national football team has created NFT collectibles for its players.

The announcement came ahead of the team’s debut at the 2020 European Championships against Germany, which will take place tonight, Tuesday 14 June 20201, at 21:00 CET.

The France Football Federation (FFF) is the first national football team to launch its NFTs, joining 140 other club teams such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus and PSG.

Furthermore, France is the current world champion team, having won the trophy in 2018 in Russia, and the new cards will be available for use in Sorare’s Global Fantasy Football game for Euro 20.

The FFF said that working with Sorare is a way to explore new revenue streams and reinforce their commitment to innovation.

NFTs are issued on the Ethereum blockchain, and are freely purchasable and exchangeable.

Sorare introduces NFTs of national football teams

Sorare would now like to involve all the world’s football federations in this initiative, not least because since January it has sold NFTs worth over $70 million, with a monthly active user base of 90,000 in 140 countries.

The company was only founded in 2018 by real football fans, with the aim of making their fantasy football a “game within a game”. It is headquartered right in Paris, and is funded by a team of investors including Benchmark, Accel Partners, e.ventures, and footballers Gerard Piqué, Antoine Griezmann and Rio Ferdinand.

Sorare co-founder and CEO Nicolas Julia said:

“Today’s news is another major milestone for Sorare. We’ve onboarded the World Champions: the french team. It is the first of many football associations that will be joining us in the coming weeks and months”.
